Day itinerary in the Sorrentine Peninsula

The first stage of the Sorrentine Peninsula itinerary is the city of Castellammare di Stabia

This centre is well known for its thermal spas, but equally known for its shipyards and the remains of three Roman villas, situated in the hilly area of Varano.

Once you have passed the “Castrum ad mare di Stabis” you arrive at Vico Equense. This city hosts a beautiful gothic style cathedral and the Mineralogical Museum of Campania, in which minerals from all over the world are on display. Beyond this are the municipalities of Meta, Piano di Sorrento and Sant’Agnello, where you will then proceed to Sorrento.

The name of this place is probably derived from the Sirens, that it is said, populated the coast and charmed Ulysses and his crew with their song.

Sorrento has been a notable tourist resort location since the Roman times. Testimony to this are the ruins of some houses found along the coast, and the road map of the Greek - Roman city with cardini (streets which crossed the town along the north-south axis)and decumani ( main roads on an east-west axis).

The visit continues to the Romantic style Cathedral and to the Sedil Dominiova, one of the two noble seats of the city, where administrative life was articulated. After examining the remains of the city walls, you reach the Basilica of St. Anthony (patron saint of the city) and thereafter the villa communale, where you will admire a beautiful view from the belvedere.

We then suggest one of the delicious restaurants nested in the corners of the city for a lunch break, perhaps to enjoy a plate of gnocchi alla Sorrentina or fresh stuffed ravioli.

We will then set off for Punta del Capo, where you find the remains of a Roman Villa, probably belonging to Pollio Felice, next to which, is a natural swimming pool called the“Bath of Queen Joan”. Lastly we finish with a visit to the Correale Museum of Terranova, where you find a collection of important paintings, porcelain, furniture and archeological finds of the Omonima family.
