Here we suggest an itinerary of 2 hours to visit the main attractions of the site. To make the most of your visit to the archeological site, we suggest, above all in the summer months, that you wear comfortable shoes, bring fresh water and a hat.
The Pompeii excavations represent an incredible testimony of the daily life that took place in a Roman city 2000 years ago. The ruins extend in an archeological site of over 66 hectares. Passing the entrance of Piazza Anfiteatro , the necropolis of Porta Nocera is reached. Strolling along, you arrive in one of the 8 points of entrance of the city. Turning right, you reach the gym and immediately after, the imposing amphitheatre which hosted about 22000 people. It was in this amphitheatre that bloody battles between the gladiators took place. Upon exiting the structure, we recommend visiting via dell’Abbondanza, the most important street in Pompeii that reaches the Forum, the city square. After a few meters, you find the entrances to the buildings, casa di Venere, famous for its alfresco in the garden and the home of Octavius Quarto, which belonged to a priest of the Egyptian cults. Along the way you will notice on the street, large stone blocks, utilized as pedestrian crossings and many electoral inscriptions along the city walls.
Other recommend stops are the Stabiane spas, where changing rooms exhibit the casts of the inhabitants, and the Forum, political, commercial and religious center of the city. Here you find numerous public buildings, including the macellum, an ancient indoor market place, the horreum, an ancient public warehouse used for the storage of grain and the Temple of Jupiter.
From the area of the Forum, travel through Via Marina in direction of the exit until you reach Porta Marina. This leads to pizza (penso che deve essere piazza?) del Santuario, where you can return to Maiuri.
