Phlegrean Champs (Campi Flegrei) represents a precious mix of art, culture and nature. Here, myth and history meet through the archeological monuments of extraordinary importance and landscapes of consuming beauty.
The ancient civilization called this land after the fiery nature of the volcanic soil. The territory of Phlegrean Champs, in fact, is characterized for its active volcanic activity of Solfatara, the hydrothermal springs of Pozzuoli, Baia, Miseno, Fusaro and the crater lake of Averno.
The myths and history are intimately linked to the volcanic nature of the territory, becoming the ideal scene for literary settings of poets and writers. Here Baios, the helmsman of Ulysses died; here Virgil made Misenus, the trumpeter of Aeneas perish; here is the entrance to the world of oltretomba (a place of continual existence); here, Sibilla Cumana dispenses with its puritanical doctrines, accompanies Aeneas of Averno and announces the greatness of Rome.
The Phlegrean Headlands were chosen by the merchant sailors for the first Magna Grecia (Greater Greece) settlements: Pithaecusa and Cumae by the Eubei (the first colonists to settle in Italy), while, the Greek refugees of the island of Samos founded Vicearchia, which currently is named Pozzuoli.
Averno hosts the port of Augustus, an imposing military port which was later transferred to Miseno. The thermal phenomena of campi flegrei transformed Baia into an exclusive holiday resort for the vices and idleness of the imperial Romans.
Today, as testimony to the grand story, the territory has inherited an invaluable monumental complex, linked, to the nature of the place, to the myths and the literature.
The particularly special beauty and natural landscape, distinguished by the presence of terraced hills cultivated with vineyards and citrus orchards, luxuriant Mediterranean scrub, forest and outstanding coastline, have encouraged human settlement since ancient times.
