The historical centre

Naples is well connected to Pompeii whether by train or by bus and is reached in about 35 minutes.

The itinerary is commenced with a walk in the Greco - Roman centre of the city, a lively, vibrant and exhilarating part of Naples, that whilst maintaining its original structure has been enriched over centuries with monumental buildings. You begin with the Duomo (cathedral), characterized by its internal decorative richness and in which the Chapel of Saint Gennaro (the patron saint of the city) stands out, a masterpiece of the baroque period.

You then proceed to Piazza San Gennaro, which corresponds to the Roman Forum of Naples. On via San Gregorio Armeno, you can admire the numerous shops which are testimony to the secular tradition of nativity scene craftsmanship.

Continuing along via "Spaccanapoli", you arrive at piazzetta Nilo (small square) and piazza San Domenico Maggiore , the ideal place to enjoy a coffee and a typical sweet. Also along the way are: the gothic church Chiesa S. Chiara in which a beautiful mosaic cloister is annexed (entrance € 4,00) and the chiesa del Gesù with a magnificent baroque interior.

Panoramic Naples

The journey commences in Piazza Municipio, where the remains of the Roman city is found. Here you will find Maschio Angioino (actual headquarters of the council), the celebrated symbol of Naples, adorned with a majestic arched entrance in marble.

From the arcade of S. Carlo, the most important theatre of the city, you arrive in the splendid Galleria Umberto I named after the king of the house of Savoy towards the end of the 19th century. You then continue to via Toledo, the shopping street of the city, which overlooks the narrow streets of the popular Spanish Quarter. After, you continue to Piazza del Plebiscito, where you find the Palazzo Reale, the seat of many dynasties that dominated the city and the elegant neoclassic church of San Francesco di Paola.

After a ritual rest at the historical caffè Gambrinus, which has an Art Nuoveau interior, you move onto the promontory of Posillipo, that offers a postcard view of the volcanic area of Campi Flegrei and the Gulf of Naples. Finally, you stop along the coast of Mergellina and Castel dell’Ovo (the most ancient of the city) whose edifice is located on a small island and incorporates the remains of the villa of the Roman nobleman Lucullus. It presents a magnificent panoramic view over the sea.
